Images you see on this website are a combination of real satellite imagery from Sentinel-2 mission and synthetic images that are generated by a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) model. The GAN model is trained on a training set of ~100K images of 256 x 256 pixels from Western Kenya.

IsThisPlaceReal.com is part of a project to generate synthetic labeled training datasets from Sentinel-2 imagery to advance agricultural monitoring applications. The project is funded through a grant by the 2019 Grand Challenges Annual Meeting Call-to-Action.
